I Ascend: Please share with our readers and tell us who is Miz Tiffany?

Miz Tiffany: I am a multi-award-winning Christian rapper, songwriter, and published author.

I Ascend: How long have you been in the industry?

Miz Tiffany: God called me into Christian Hip Hop or the ministry of Hip Hop in 2013. I have been in this arena for nine years, however, I was a secular rapper before then. I was in a really bad car accident, it totally changed my life. God totally healed me and brought me out of that situation. There was no way I was going to continue to say the things that I was saying prior and do the things that I was doing at that time. I couldn’t glorify that stuff any longer. I understood that I did not have to still be here, that God gave me His grace, He gave me a second lease on life. I had to be diligent and be dignified about doing the things that He has called me to do. I turned my life over to Him to represent the kingdom.

I Ascend: What has the process of becoming been like for you on this journey?

Miz Tiffany: It has been a waiting process, because it was all of the things that God started to do in my life, and stir these different gifts in me. Each of them had their own life. In some seasons, where the music wasn’t the highlight, it would be my book, or in some seasons where music or books weren’t going, it would be the modeling. People ask me all the time, how do you get it all done? Sometimes, I have seasons where it’s all going at the same time. It has definitely been a weighty process I would say. Some people are focused on the W-A-I-T but there is the W-E-I-G-H-T, the weight of God’s glory has been a part of this process too. I get why I had to wait and the significance of the weight, and why he held me back for certain reasons. It didn’t feel good all the time, but I’m now starting to roll out and people are starting to really listen and recognize what God is doing.

I Ascend: What hardships have you faced in Ascending to where you are currently?

Miz Tiffany: There have been many hardships, being an independent artist is not an easy feat, it’s not an easy thing to do. Because you have to invest in your craft and that takes sacrifice. When you have other responsibilities, you have to know the priorities, you take care of family first. I have been able to, at some points invest in my craft. I will say that, has been one of the biggest challenges. Another big challenge is the perspective of others that myself and a lot of women in Christian Rap face. It is sort of a double standard. If you are a wife or you have children, they don’t believe you can or shouldn’t do certain things. There are female gospel singers who are wives, and who are mothers as well. They travel and that’s not considered an obstruction for them. They likewise have children and are wives with domestic responsibilities. So how can one equate that to the female Christian rapper and say that if you have a man in your life, or if you have children, that’s an issue? I just didn’t get the logic of that. That is one of the things we face sometimes and a lot of people in the industry will just say, they don’t know how to market us.

I Ascend: Who has been that cushion during those hard times? And what have you learned from it?

Miz Tiffany: I can truly say that God never left me. I’m just going to give credit where credit’s due. It’s been God by my side the entire time. My family, some of my family members, and my children have always stood behind me, and pushed me and encouraged me to move forward.

I Ascend: Congratulations on becoming an author, tell us where readers you can get it.

Miz Tiffany: The book that I authored with my daughter is called “My Dolly And Me” and it’s available on Amazon. To place a direct order for autographed copies, email tiffany.colemanmcgee@gmail.com.  I also have another children’s book called “Hippos Downtown” that has become a school library and household favorite. I just released a Manifestation Journal called “Girl, God Is In The Details.”

I Ascend: Congratulations on standing in your Truth and Pursuing Destiny. What do you want people to remember most about you?

Miz Tiffany: That I never stopped trying. The resilience is what I want them to remember the most. I want them to remember that no matter what I went through, no matter how many challenges I had I never stopped trying. I never gave up if something didn’t work out. But, honestly when I think about it, God’s favor has been with me all my life. Usually if I tried it, it worked and so I was never afraid to try anything.

I Ascend: Share with our readers about your journey, your process.

Miz Tiffany:  I started writing Christian rap in March of 2013. It was during a moment just two months prior, that I was sitting in the car at the Salvation Army and God spoke to me. Nine years after the accident and leaving the secular side of things, God told me that that he was going to send me out to the nations to spread the Gospel through rap. I had never heard of gospel rap before. I didn’t know it was a genre, I didn’t know there was a whole culture out there. I heard his voice, I said yes and I rose to the occasion. I remember Mixed Bag Entertainment was having a 16 bar challenge. I had just started writing my music. I said, “I’m going to be the first female rapper to be signed with them.” Then God tells me that I can’t do the 16 bar challenge. Here’s this wait process that we talked about earlier. I waited 4 years and learned as much as I could about the business. I started making connections and building relationships, building my network, and people started to gravitate to what I was doing. Doors were open, all doors really had been open to me, from the smallest door to some of the largest doors and platforms. I went to Atlanta in 2016 to record a video for “I Ain’t Preaching To The choir”, which was my first single and the name of the EP. While I was there, the makeup artist thought that I had some nice features and asked me if I would model for a campaign that she just so happened to be having the same weekend. I did the campaign and it really put something in my spirit about modeling. When I was younger, my mom used to have me involved in some stuff like that but I had stopped. I started back after my trip from Atlanta.

I put out my music video and I got a call from one of the talent scouts for Dr. Bobby Jones, that was doing some recruiting for them. They never had a female gospel rapper on the show before. I made history by becoming the first to do that. I recorded with Dr. Jones, I always wanted to be on the show, just watching him on BET; this was even before I knew I’d become a gospel artist.  During a photo shoot in downtown Jackson, a local photographer asked if I had ever thought about acting. He said he would will send me some stuff and to just follow the instructions. I did what he said and I got a call back from the casting agency. I submitted what they asked. They wanted to book me for Queen Sugar. That was my first experience on the set of a major television network series. I really enjoyed that. I figured out then that this is where I’m supposed to be. This is my office, this is why I’ve always been frustrated with doing other things. Because that wasn’t my place. It wasn’t my environment but when I got there, I became so alive. it was just a vibrant place to be. I loved the energy, and I never got tired. There’s one thing that I noticed, no matter how long we were there, 12 hours, 13, 14 hours, I never got tired. Then I got a call from a casting agency in Chicago and I got an email saying that I had been booked for Fox’s Empire as Shyne’s Children’s mother in season 4 with Taraji P. Henson, Terrence Howard, Jussie Smollett, Trai Byers, Bryshere Grey, and Serayah McNeill.

I Ascend: You have had an amazing Journey are there any other highlights you would like to share?

Miz Tiffany: Those are some of the highlights that show that God will do what He said, when you do what He said. In 2019, I made history at the Stellar Awards; I became the first solo female rapper to ever receive an official nomination for (Rap) Hip Hop CD of the year. I have won about 40 awards and that many more nominations since I started this musical journey –all these things God had shown to me before they ever happened. Meeting new people and inspiring others is fulfilling.

I Ascend: What word of advice would you give to our readers to have them to continue to Ascend in pursuit of their dream, no matter where they are currently?

Miz Tiffany: You have got to try. If you don’t try, you won’t know and you won’t be able to grow in the things that God has given to you as a passion, gift or talent. If you don’t know the way to go, everything is on the internet, so start researching and educating yourself. I became an author because I went to YouTube and I started watching videos. It’s something I really wanted to do from a very young age. I didn’t know any authors who were friends of mine, or ones that were willing to share information. You have to become educated, do some research find the information that you need. Use the information as a tool to do what it is that you desire to do. Try to connect with some folks that will help you and mentor you. Before you enter into this industry, you do need a mentor, someone who will hold your hand and kind of guide you along the way. There is so much out there that you do need to know and be aware of. Even with all of my research in my study and my network, there were certain things I still didn’t know. Some of it will come with experience. From that you gain wisdom and learn to navigate. Get informed, get educated, network, build relationships, and go in the way God has told you. Don’t be afraid, but if you are afraid, do it afraid. Just do it. It’s never too late no matter how old you are, or what you had going on in your past. Don’t condemn yourself for your past or lost time. Ask God for forgiveness, repent, and pick yourself up by the bootstraps and keep on going.

I Ascend: Share with us some of the projects you’re currently working on. How can our readers continue to follow and stay abreast of all that you’re doing?

Miz Tiffany: I have my sophomore album that is getting ready to be released under Mixed Bag Entertainment. I’m really excited about that. We are still working on a few things, but the album is coming. It’ll be 11 tracks, there’s going to be some major features on there. You’ll get some of your favorite gospel artists and rappers as well on this album. Look forward to some glam and some beauty and some fashion of course. You can connect with me anytime on social media @officialmiztiffany. I have some movies coming out too.

I Ascend: Any names for the movies or there’s still something in the works and you don’t want to let it tell it right now?

Miz Tiffany: There’s a whole trailer out there and the name of the movie is called “Shield By His Grace.” This is a love story, but it’s also a story of redemption and healing and there’s some great messages along the way.
