I Ascend: Who is SINGLTN?
SINGLTN: There are so many answers to that, First, SINGLTN is someone who loves music, I am a label owner, a musician, artist, songwriter, and singer. In running my own label this has afforded me the ability to present my music to wherever I would like on my own terms. I am a new artist on the scene making sure that I control all my music content. RB4 Entertainment has provided greater creative control and how my narrative is presented.
I Ascend: Where did your musical journey begin?
SINGLTN: My journey began in the church and that was beautiful. I started singing when I was about five years old, growing up my whole family who sings. The church is where I performed my first solo, this is where my love for music comes from. I joined an Ensemble and worked as a Model while living in New York. Through my modelling endeavours I had the honour of being portrayed by the famous American portrait painter Kehinde Wiley in 2008 in three of his oil paintings debuted in Wiley’s solo exhibition. I then pursued higher education to study music, and graduated from Savannah State University where I obtained a degree in Vocal Performance.
I Ascend: What has the process of becoming been like for you? The highs and the lows?
SINGLTN: The process of becoming has been a great education for me. The highs have been, being on the radio, I have achieved some success. It has been great being known and heard on different stations all across the country in addition to Sirius XM radio. I have received a lot of cool feedback and people are receiving my music well, that’s been a big highlight. We launched when COVID had just started, so I look at it from the perspective of things being balanced. We experienced the highs where we launched, built a presence, we were being seen and heard, becoming known and was received well. If I had to say there was a low it would just be COVID because of COVID we were unable to keep building on that high.
I Ascend: COVID has definitely caused a lot of pause for many things. What has this experience taught you even through COVID to be able to continue maneuvering and still Ascend?
SINGLTN: COVID has taught me that you have to have good work ethic. My work ethic has always been strong but COVID has made my work ethic even stronger. It caused me to look at how I can build in different ways. In other words like how, I was able to do this interview with yourself. So mostly we had to do interviews through other means. Most artists, love to record I would go and hang out in the studio for a couple of weeks and create records, I was not able to do that in the early stages of COVID. So it was all just on zoom. It was about doing what was necessary, trying to make it work. It took perseverance, and then me being, a fitness person really helped me. I worked out regularly even though I could not go to the gym I purchased gym equipment to work out at home.
I Ascend: How has it been trying to juggle your home life and still pursuing your craft?
SINGLTN: It can been a little challenging. However, I have been doing this for some time and it has worked. Nothing really changed for me on my end, because I’m always a father. I have two sons, and I am married. I am the dad that has always been present. There is nothing concerning my family duties that has changed. I am a business professional so getting general things done is never an issue. The only challenge at the time COVID first started was getting into the studio like I used to at that time.
I Ascend: I’m very glad to hear that family is one of your priorities, those family moments are times you can never replace. As you continue this journey, what do you want people to remember about you?
SINGLTN: I want people to remember that I did it my way, on my own terms. I was able to do music that I wanted to sing. I do not have to get permission from nobody, everything I put out is what I want to put out. No one is telling me what I need to say or what I have to say. I want them to know that every time I put out a project, it is something I have thought about. That whatever I decide to release I want it to be out, to be heard and received. When visual are created it is what I wanted people to see and remember. It is about being a positive influence for me, not just going with what everybody else is doing, you know. I want my music and my videos to have a message. That is the most important thing I want people to remember.
I Ascend: What advice would you give to our readers, to encourage them in the pursuit of their dreams, to continue to ascend in spite of any challenges they may face?
SINGLTN: I would say, be sure to do your research. Find yourself a team that you want to work with. In addition, make sure you know what you want to say. Make sur you know the message that you want to convey and present out there. Most importantly, do not follow a trend that makes you stick out the most be authentic. That would be my two cents on that.
I Ascend: Tell us what you’re currently working on and how our readers can stay in touch with you, Follow you etc… How can they remain connected?
SINGLTN: I be performing various shows throughout the New Year. We are also working on “The Singleton experience”, and the readers can stay up to day with what I’m doing on my Website: https://www.singltnmusic.com/ and I can be followed on:
